WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- Office Depot has made a deal to buy smaller rival Office Max for $1.2 billion dollars.

Industry insiders say the merger is an attempt to better position the two companies to compete with Staples.

But, the mega office supplies retailer could possibly benefit from the move because the combined company will likely close some stores.
