ROCKVILLE, Md. (WUSA) -- Tuesday, the Montgomery County Council unanimously approved a bill to ban smoking on most county owned or leased property.

The bill included amendments to expand the ban to bus stops and bus shelters. The county's director of Health and Human Services will be able to designate outdoor smoking areas on some county properties, addressing concerns about the bill's impact on county-owned and leased facilities with programs used to treat people with addictions. Some people believed banning smoking at these facilities could negatively impact the treatment of people battling addiction.

Officials say the committee "also recommended that the ban should not prohibit smoking on County-owned golf courses." Currently, this only impacts the Falls Road course in Potomac.

Any violations are a class C civil violation.
