RICHMOND, Va. (WUSA) -- The Virginia House Of Delegates passed the Virginia's Road to the Future transportation funding and reform package on Tuesday morning. According to a statement from Governor Bob McDonnell it:
"...will generate the largest infusion of funding for Virginia's transportation system in more than 25 years. The plan will invest $3 billion over just the next five years to create a safe, efficient and reliable transportation system throughout the Commonwealth, while creating an estimated 20,000 jobs. "
The governor earlier cited a study on traffic congestion in Northern Virginia as part of his push to pass transportation funding bills HB 2313 and SB 1355. The study by the Texas Transportation Institute showed drivers in the area lose 67 hours in delays each year. The report also shows each driver loses $1398.
The bill had some amendments before it was advanced by the House.
The Senate still needs to vote on the legislation.
