Amherst, MA (Sports Network) - Chaz Williams scored a game-high 18 points as the Massachusetts Minutemen recorded a 70-65 win over the Richmond Spiders in an Atlantic 10 Conference tilt at the Mullins Center.
Williams added six rebounds, five assists and three steals in order to offset his seven turnovers as the Minutemen (13-5, 3-2 A-10) recorded a third win in four games. Cady Lalanne and Sampson Carter chipped in with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The Spiders (13-8, 3-3) were led by Wayne Sparrow who came away with 13 points off the bench, followed by Cedrick Lindsay with 12 and Greg Robbins 10 points as the team had a two-game win streak snapped.
UMass scored the first points of the game and led for the entire first half, eventually taking a 34-29 advantage into the break thanks to 55.0 percent shooting from the field.
In the second half Richmond bounced back and actually held a 63-56 edge with just over six minutes remaining. But again the Minutemen shot the ball well from the floor overall at 50.0 percent, using a 14-2 run to close out the meeting and grab the five-point victory.
UMass survived despite shooting only 3-of-15 beyond the arc on the day.
