Las Cruces, NM (Sports Network) - Bandja Sy finished with 16 points and eight rebounds as the New Mexico State Aggies cruised to a 70-53 decision over the San Jose State Spartans in a Western Athletic Conference tussle at the Pan American Center.
Daniel Mullings added 13 points for NMSU (12-8, 6-2 WAC) as it notched its sixth consecutive victory. Tyrone Watson chipped in 10 points and four assists while Sim Bhullar grabbed nine rebounds.
LaVanne Pennington paced the Spartans (9-9, 3-4) by scoring 16 points and swiping five steals.
Despite shooting just 35.1 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, the Aggies took a sizeable 35-18 lead into halftime. SJSU trailed by 17 points at the break after it made only seven of its 25 field goal attempts in the first half.
NMSU outscored the visitors, 12-2, in the paint and converted 12-of-18 at the charity stripe in the second half. Although the Spartans heated up to hit 48 percent of their attempts from the field including 5-of-8 from 3-point range, they were unable to narrow the margin after the break.
The Aggies held a dominant, 46-24 edge in rebounding on its way to the win.
