BELTSVILLE, Md. (WUSA) -- A fiery head-on collision in Beltsville claimed two lives and shut down a portion of Route 1 on Friday. The road reopened nearly eight hours after the crash.

Maryland State Police are investigating the violent crash, which occurred on Route 1 (Baltimore Avenue) near Powder Mill Road around 1:38 Friday morning. According to Sgt. Darryl Clark, a Chevy Camero, traveling in the southbound lanes of Route 1 inexplicably crossed over to the northbound lanes where it struck a loaded tow truck head-on.

One person in the Camero was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Another person perished inside the vehicle. Neither person had identification on them, say police, and a forensic examiner will help identify them.

The driver of the tow truck was taken to Prince George's Hospital where he is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Crash reconstruction investigators are on scene, as well as the Medical Examiner. Police say speed was definitely a factor in the crash. It is yet to be determined if alcohol played any part in the incident. The two vehicles collided at a curve in the road.
