WASHINGTON (WUSA) --The First Family will light the National Christmas Tree later today.It's an 89-year-old tradition started by
President Calvin Coolidge.

This year's giant blue spruce was just transplanted in October.

Scott Tucker of the National Park Service spoke to us about the event on the Ellipse Thursday morning. See the interview above.

The ceremony is expected to begin at 4:30 p.m.

Metro says bus routes in downtown could experience delays or detours due to the event. Thefollowing streets will be closed between 4:15 p.m. and 7:00 p.m:

• 15th Street NW from Constitution Ave. to Pennsylvania Ave.
• 17th Street NW from Constitution Ave. to New York Ave.

Constitution Ave. NW between 15th and 17th streets may be closed if necessary, say Metro officials.

They also expect traffic impacts at:
• 18th Street NW
• 13th Street NW
• 14th Street NW
• H Street NW
• I Street NW
• K Street NW

These Metrobus routes may experience delays and detours:
