(DES MOINES REGISTER) -- An Iowan is now the world's oldest person.

The woman who had been listed as the oldest person in the world died Tuesday in Georgia. That leaves Dina Manfredini of Johnston as the most senior person on the planet, according to the Gerontology Research Group.

Manfredini is 115 years and 244 days old.

Born in Italy in 1897, Manfredini moved to the United States in 1920. She married and had four children.

Her husband was hurt working in Des Moines' coal mine in the 1940s so she worked to support her family.

She cracked eggs at a food processing plant and filled shells with gunpowder at a munitions factory.

Manfredini cleaned houses for extra money into her 90s and lived alone in a West Des Moines home well past her 100th birthday.

She and family members could not be reached Tuesday night to comment on the new milestone.

Besse Cooper, who was the oldest person in the world at age 116, died peacefully Tuesday in a Monroe, Ga., nursing home, according to her son Sidney Cooper.

The Associated Press reported that Cooper was declared the world's oldest person in January 2011.

In May 2011, Guinness World Records learned that Maria Gomes Valentin of Brazil was 48 days older. Valentin died the next month.
