Vienna, Austria (Sports Network) - Seeds Janko Tipsarevic and Tommy Haas were a pair of easy second-round winners Thursday at the Erste Bank Open.
The second-seeded Serbian Tipsarevic whipped Latvian wild card Ernests Gulbis 6-3, 6-4, while the third-seeded German Haas leveled Canadian-born American Jesse Levine 6-4, 6-2 on the indoor hardcourts at Wiener Stadthalle.
Tipsarevic's quarterfinal opponent will be little-known Slovenian Aljaz Bedene, while the former world No. 2 Haas will meet Slovenian qualifier Grega Zemlja on Friday. Bedene beat American Donald Young 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, while Zemlja defeated Aussie Matthew Ebden 7-5, 6-4 on Day 4.
Also on Thursday, Aussie Marinko Matosevic bested Austrian wild card Dominic Thiem 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) and Italian Paolo Lorenzi disposed of Canadian qualifier Vasek Pospisil 6-4, 6-4.
Friday's other quarters will pit top-seeded Argentine Juan Martin del Potro against Matosevic and Luxembourg's Gilles Muller versus Lorenzi. The former U.S. Open champion del Potro was last year's Vienna runner-up to Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
The newest Vienna champion will pocket $113,795.
