New York, NY (Sports Network) - Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander has been named American League Pitcher of the Month for September.
Verlander went 5-1 with a 1.93 earned run average over six starts to help the Tigers claim the AL Central. The right-hander finished first in wins and tied for first with 41 strikeouts over 42 innings.
Verlander struck out 11 over eight frames in a Sept. 2 start against the Chicago White Sox, who the Tigers beat out for the AL Central crown.
The Old Dominion product improved to 12-1 with a 2.23 ERA and 90 strikeouts in 101 innings against his division rivals since the start of the 2009 season.
Verlander also earned his 15th win for the fourth straight season and the sixth time overall in his eight-year career.
Other hurlers receiving votes included Tampa Bay Rays starter David Price, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim starters Zack Greinke and Jered Weaver and Verlander's teammate Max Scherzer.
