BOWIE, Md. (WUSA) -- A woman was killed by her own car, in a bizarre parking lot accident on Sunday in Prince George's County, police said.
It happened at 11:28 a.m., at the St. Edwards Catholic Church in Bowie, when an "elderly woman" was trying to park her car, police said.
"According to the witnesses, the female exited her vehicle without putting the vehicle in park. The vehicle then started to drift backwards while the driver side door was still open. The female was struck by the open door of her vehicle when she lost her balance and fell to the asphalt. The vehicle then inadvertently backed over the female causing fatal injuries," police said in a news release.
When police arrived to the scene, the found the woman unresponsive, with no pulse, they said.
She was taken to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
