LANHAM, MD (WUSA) -- Police have identified the man shot to death by a Metro transit police officer as Chester Joseph Crestwell of New Carrollton.

It happened around 12:30 Wednesday afternoon. A metro police detective was in the 7100 block of Lory Lane in Lanham, Maryland investigating a weekend attempted abduction at a D.C. metro bus stop.

Metro says the detective, who's a 6-year veteran, came to the neighborhood to talk to people. Witnesses say the suspect came out with a gun and chased after the officer then rammed the police cruiser.

There was an exchange of gunfire. Witnesses heard four or five shots. The 44-year-old suspect was found dead in the road.

Metro says the man was a person of interest in an attempted abduction of a 25-year-old woman. That victim says the man was impersonating a police officer.

Metro routinely investigates crime throughout the region when it involves the transit system. But the last police involved shooting was in Fairfax county in 2008.

Police have not identified the suspect. The officer is on paid administrative leave.
