WASHINGTON (WUSA/AP/Getty Images) --- Members of the military participated in a ceremony and commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Midway at the U.S. Navy Memorial on Monday in Washington, DC.Several survivors of the battle were on hand for the ceremony.

The battle of Midway took place in the south Pacific, six months after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. It's regarded as the most important naval battle of the Pacific Campaign during WWII.

Japan sent four aircraft carriers to Midway Atoll on June 4, 1942.
Tokyo wanted to draw out and destroy what remained of the U.S. Pacific Fleet. But Navy intelligence cracked the code Japan's military used to communicate over radio, giving the U.S. advance notice of Japanese plans. The tables for an ambush had turned.

The U.S. sank all four Japanese aircraft carriers on the first day of the three-day battle and put Japan on the defensive for the rest of the war.
