WASHINGTON (WUSA) -In order to update the city's taxicabs, a new regulation was published by The District of Columbia Taxicab Commission to phase out older vehicles by 2013.

The new law says no vehicle over five years old or with more than 300,000 miles will be in service come January 1, 2013.

The D.C. Taxicab Commission believe these new standards will be key in launching the city's taxis into the 21st century.

Mayor Gray hopes the improvement program will include a much needed credit card payment system, new safety protection for drivers and passengers, a GPS tracking system, and an increase in wheelchair-accessible vehicles.
