Prom is a big deal nowadays. The cost can be downright shocking. A recent survey by Visa finds that some families will spend as much as $2,000 on their kids' prom costs. A big place to save is on the dress.

There are a lot of options open to young women and their parents. Consignment stores can offer beautiful gowns at a fraction of the original retail price. Shopping the sale racks is always a good choice. Working the friend network to borrow a gown someone else wore. There's also a relatively new option: renting a gown.

RenttheRunway.comis an online women's fashion rental business. It's free to sign up and women can choose from hundreds of gowns to rent online, typically the same gown seen on the runway for 10 to 15 percent of the retail price. For example, a Yigal Azrouel Graphic Mod Dress retailing for $2,195, would rent for $200. RenttheRunway also rents jewelry and sells makeup to finish the look.
