Lawrence, KS (Sports Network) - Kansas running back James Sims has been suspended for the first three games of the 2012 season.

The announcement was made Monday by head coach Charlie Weis, citing a violation of team rules.

"Every player on our team knows and understands our rules and regulations. They also know the consequences for violations," said Weis, who was named to the post in early December.

Sims, a north Texas native, rushed for 727 yards and nine touchdowns on 182 carries for the Jayhawks last season. In two collegiate campaigns, he has gained 1,469 yards and scored 18 times on 350 attempts.

Kansas finished 2-10 with an 0-9 record in the Big 12 last year. It hosts South Dakota State, Rice and TCU on consecutive September weekends to kick off 2012.
