COLUMBIA, Md. (WUSA) -- Some neighbors may be a little annoyed at the massive Christmas lights display at one home in Columbia, Md. But Charles Daniels is keeping his decorations up for a very good reason: he's a national finalist in a "Deck the House" contest.

This year Daniels put up 250,000 lights at his home on Durham Road East.

Daniels says his extreme holiday lighting began 12 years ago, after he retired and had more time to put up decorations.

Daniels adds that he's used up to half-a-million lights, but cut back recently because of electricity costs.

If his home wins the Patch "Deck the House" contest, he'll get $500 to help offset that electric bill, but Howard County Schools will be the real winner with a $100,000 prize.

Online voting runs through January 8.
