Vernon Davis meets fans at Fashion Centre for a good cause

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) - Vernon Davis, the Washington Redskins tight end, celebrated mentorship, fatherhood and giving back to the community by offering some words of advice to a younger crowd

Davis held a meet-and-greet in the Mezlan store in Fashion Centre at Pentagon City on Saturday where he gave fans autographs and spoke to youth members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington.

“My son is with me here today and it's important that I'm here with you guys today, not only as a father, but because I know what it's like to sit in your seat,” Davis told the group.

Mezlan, a men’s shoe company, will donate a portion of their proceeds to the BGCGW until the end of August.

“Kids need to feel free to dream, as I once did,” said Antonio Sanchez, the owner, designer and president of Mezlan. “And they need to know that if they can dream it they can become it."

Davis stressed the importance of fathers showing their kids how to be leaders and what it’s like to make a difference.

"As a mentor, I want to see you all be successful, and I want to see you grow,” he said.

"Accept pressure, failure and adversity. That makes us better,” he added. “Those are the things that made us great.”

The president and CEO of the BGCGW said it is vital for the kids to share experiences like this one with role models.

“Especially someone like Vernon, who genuinely cares about their future,” Webster said.

Davis said he does the same thing now as he did in 10th grade: work out, train hard, and do whatever he has to do to “get there.”

“You have to stay positive and optimistic,” Davis said. “Always think you can be successful and stay on right track.”

Mezlan will donate 20 percent of proceeds to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington until August 31. Use the promo code ‘VD85’ at checkout to donate.
