Melbourne, Australia (Sports Network) - The women's Australian Open champion
will be decided Saturday when world No. 1 and reigning champion Victoria
Azarenka takes on 2011 runner-up Li Na.
The 23-year-old Azarenka is 5-4 lifetime against the 30-year-old Li, who beat
the Belarusian star in the fourth round in Melbourne and in the quarterfinals
at the French Open two years ago. Azarenka, however, won all three of their
tour meetings last year.
Azarenka beat Maria Sharapova in last year's Aussie finale to capture her
first-ever Grand Slam singles title. Li upset a second-seeded Sharapova in the
semifinals here on Thursday.
Azarenka is 14-11 in her career finals, including 1-1 at the majors. She lost
to Serena Williams in the U.S. Open final back in September and will now
appear in her third Grand Slam final in her last five major events.
The Belarusian star is currently riding a 13-match winning streak in
Melbourne.
The sixth-seeded Li captured the French Open and was the Aussie runner-up in
2011. The Chinese slugger is 7-8 in her overall career finals.
