Auckland, New Zealand (Sports Network) - Top-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska beat
Belgian Yanina Wickmayer, 6-4, 6-4 on Saturday to claim the ASB Classic title.
The Poland native Radwanska captured her 11th career WTA championship, this
one on hardcourts.
After securing a relatively easy first-set win, Radwanska led the second set,
5-2 before Wickmayer battled back to make it 5-4.
In the decisive game, Wickmayer fought off several match points, but was
eventually denied what could have been her fourth career win and second ASB
title in four years. She won this event in 2010 and was the runner-up in 2011.
Saturday's finale marked the third head-to-head meeting between the pair as
Radwanska now holds a 2-1 edge.
Radwanska earned a 6-4, 6-4 win at the 2011 French Open, but Wickmayer
prevailed with a 1-6, 7-6 (8-6), 7-5 triumph at the 2010 Fed Cup.Radwanska
improved to 11-4 lifetime in finals.
Radwanska will collect $40,000 for winning this tournament, which serves as a
tuneup for the Australian Open, which starts January 14.
