Tashkent, Uzbekistan (Sports Network) - Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu claimed
her first WTA title with a straight-set win over Croatian qualifier Donna
Vekic in Saturday's final at the Tashkent Open.
Begu, who upended second-seeded Urszula Radwanska in the semifinals on Friday,
posted a 6-4, 6-4 triumph Saturday in her third career final. She had reached
the title matches in Marbella and Budapest last year.
The 16-year-old Vekic was the youngest player to reach a WTA final since 2006
when Austrian Tamira Paszek, at the age of 15, titled in Portoroz.
Begu, whose best previous finish this year was a semifinal appearance at
Palermo in July, collected a first prize of $37,000.
