Flushing Meadows, NY (Sports Network) - Novak Djokovic is back in the U.S.
Open final after completing a rain-delayed semifinal victory over David Ferrer
on Sunday.
Djokovic looked lost during the start of the match Saturday, trailing 5-2 in
the first set when play was halted because of weather issues. He completely
turned it around on Sunday in much more serene conditions and posted a 2-6,
6-1, 6-4, 6-2 victory to reach his third straight final at Flushing Meadows.
On Monday, the Serbian star will meet Olympic champion Andy Murray, who
advanced Saturday with a four-set win over Tomas Berdych. It will mark the
fifth straight Monday finish for the men at the USTA National Tennis Center.
Djokovic beat Rafael Nadal last year to win his first U.S. Open title,
avenging a loss to the Spanish superstar the previous year. Djokovic also lost
in the 2007 U.S. Open final against Roger Federer.
Ferrer played better in the windy conditions on Saturday, then held serve when
play resumed on Sunday to finish the opening set, but things turned quickly
the other way.
Djokovic won the first five games of the second set, then converted a pair of
breaks in the third and finished it with an ace. Ferrer never recovered and
went down 0-4 in the fourth. Djokovic completed the match with a volley.
