Flushing Meadows, NY (Sports Network) - Russian Ekaterina Makarova and
Brazilian Bruno Soares captured the mixed doubles title Thursday at the 2012
U.S. Open.
The unseeded tandem of the 24-year-old Peschke and 30-year-old Soares
outlasted a fourth-seeded duo of Czech Kveta Peschke and Poland's Marcin
Matkowski 6-7 (8-10), 6-1, 12-10, including a third-set super tiebreak, at
Arthur Ashe Stadium.
This marks the first Grand Slam title of any kind for Makarova or Soares, who
beat two different teams with one of the twin American Bryan brothers on it,
including a pairing of Bob Bryan and outgoing Belgian star Kim Clijsters.
Makarova and Soares will split $150,000.
