Flushing Meadows, NY (Sports Network) - David Ferrer won the only men's
fourth-round match that was completed during a rainy Tuesday at the U.S. Open.
Ferrer, the No. 4 seed from Spain, ousted 13th-seeded Richard Gasquet of
France, 7-5, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 in a match that was delayed twice by rain, which
also caused the three remaining fourth-round matches to be moved to Wednesday.
One of those battles featured Andy Roddick in perhaps his final match. The
30-year-old American announced last week this would be his final tournament,
one that he won in 2003 for his only major title.
Roddick, seeded 20th, was able to start his match at Arthur Ashe Stadium
against seventh-seeded and 2009 champion Juan Martin del Potro, and was even
serving for the first set before the Argentine converted a break chance and
eventually forced a tiebreak.
Rain started coming down heavily during the first point of the tiebreak, and
after Roddick won the point, play was stopped for the fourth time on Day 9.
A break ensued before it was announced the match will conclude on Wednesday.
A busy Day 10 will also see the conclusion of the Novak Djokovic-Stanislas
Wawrinka and Janko Tipsarevic-Philipp Kohlschreiber matches.
Djokovic, the No. 2 seed and reigning U.S. and Aussie Open champ, was leading
the 18th-seeded Wawrinka, 2-0, while No. 8 Tipsarevic owned a 5-2 lead before
play was stopped.
Ferrer will meet either Tipsarevic or the 19th-seeded Kohlschreiber in the
quarterfinals, which will also begin on Wednesday.
Top-seeded Roger Federer, a five-time U.S. Open champion, will take on sixth-
seeded Czech Tomas Berdych, while the Olympic gold medalist and Wimbledon
runner-up Andy Murray will meet 12th-seeded Croatian slugger Marin Cilic.
Federer, who captured his seventh Wimbledon title in July, will appear in a
men's-record 34th straight Grand Slam quarterfinal.
