Wimbledon, England (Sports Network) - Reigning gold medallists Serena Williams
and Venus Williams secured a spot in the women's doubles semifinals at the
Olympic Games tennis event.
The unseeded sisters blew away second-seeded Italians Sara Errani and Roberta
Vinci 6-1, 6-1 Thursday at the All England Club. Serena is also into the
singles semis here. Errani was a surprise French Open singles runner-up in
June.
Serena and Venus won the Wimbledon doubles title in this London suburb last
month and captured Olympic gold together in Beijing four years ago and Sydney
in 2000.
Their semifinal opponents on Friday will be third-seeded Russians Maria
Kirilenko and Nadia Petrova. Kirilenko, like Serena, will also compete in a
singles semifinal on Day 7.
The other women's doubles semi will pit top-seeded Americans Liezel Huber and
Lisa Raymond against fourth-seeded Czechs Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie
Hradecka. The 35-year-old Huber and 38-year-old Raymond are the reigning U.S.
Open champs.
