Baku, Azerbaijan (Sports Network) - Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia claimed her
first WTA title Saturday with a straight-set victory over American Julia Cohen
in the Baku Cup tennis tournament.
The fifth-seeded Jovanovski rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 triumph in her first-ever
final. She became the first Serbian to win a WTA event since Ana Ivanovic last
year in Bali.
Jovanovski, ranked 97th, entered this week with a main draw match record of
6-10, with her best previous finish a quarterfinal appearance in Copenhagen
back in April.
Cohen, in just her third WTA event, was also playing in her first final. The
23-year-old Philadelphia native has five ITF titles, but had never appeared in
a WTA main draw match until this year. She fell in qualifying 34 times before
finally reaching the main draw at Bogota in February.
Jovanovski, who collected a first prize of $37,000, broke serve five times and
had her serve broken just once in Saturday's 94-minute match.
