Carlsbad, CA (Sports Network) - Former world No. 1 Jelena Jankovic and rising
American Christina McHale were second-round winners Thursday at the $740,000
Mercury Insurance Open tennis event.
Jankovic, seeded third, rallied to beat Hungary's Melinda Czink, 2-6, 6-4,
6-4. This is the sixth Carlsbad appearance for the Serbian Jankovic, who
hasn't posted a title since 2010 at Indian Wells.
McHale, the No. 5 seed, downed Japan's Misaki Doi, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Earlier this
year, McHale reached the third round at the Australian Open. She's ranked 27th
in the world, but has a giant task ahead of her Friday, when she will take on
top-seeded Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli in the quarterfinals.
Also Thursday, second seed Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia topped New Zealand's
Marina Erakovic, 6-2, 6-4 on the hardcourts at La Costa Resort and Spa.
One other second-rounder saw Poland's Urszula Radwanska drill American lucky-
loser Melanie Oudin 6-2, 6-1 in 65 minutes. Radwanska is the younger sister of
world No. 2 Wimbledon runner-up Agnieszka Radwanska.
The 2012 Carlsbad champ will claim $96,000.
