Paris, France (Sports Network) - Former world No. 1 star Amelie Mauresmo was
appointed as the new captain of France's Fed Cup team.
She replaces Nicolas Escude, as announced by the French Tennis Federation.
"Big news: @AmeMauresmo is the new captain of the France @FedCup team! Bravo
Amelie," the FFT wrote on its Twitter feed.
The now-33-year-old Mauresmo captured the Fed Cup as a player in 2003 and also
secured a pair of Grand Slam titles -- the Australian Open and Wimbledon -- in
2006. She retired from tennis in 2009.
Mauresmo has been coaching current world No. 1 and Australian Open champion
Victoria Azarenka of Belarus for the past several weeks.
Two-time winner France will not be in the World Group next year, which means
it cannot capture the Fed Cup again until 2014 at the earliest.
