Hamburg, Germany (Sports Network) - Long-time German crowd favorite
Tommy Haas upset second-seeded and defending champion Gilles Simon in
Wednesday's second-round action at the $1.1 million German Tennis
Championships.
The wild card former world No. 2 Haas fought back to bounce the French Simon
in 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 fashion on the red clay at Rothenbaum Tennis Arena. The oft-
injured Haas is into the quarterfinals here for the first time in 13 years.
Simon beat Spaniard Nicolas Almagro, this week's top seed, in last year's
Hamburg finale.
The 34-year-old Haas stunned the tennis world by beating Wimbledon champion
Roger Federer in a title match in Halle here in Germany last month. The sweet-
swinging German has won eight of his last 10 matches on tour.
Fourth-seeded Marin Cilic stayed red-hot with a 6-3, 6-2 pasting of Argentine
qualifier Federico Delbonis. Cilic is fresh off his clay-court title in Umag
in his native Croatia last week.
Also on Wednesday, seventh-seeded German Florian Mayer whipped Dutchman Robin
Haase 6-2, 6-1 and Spaniard Albert Ramos snuck past Czech Lukas Rosol 7-6
(10-8), 4-6, 6-3. The big-serving Rosol shocked the great Rafael Nadal in a
second-round match on Centre Court at Wimbledon last month.
Ramos will face Cilic in Friday's quarterfinals, while Mayer will meet Haas in
an all-German affair.
In some second-round action on Thursday, Almagro will battle former top-five
star and 2009 Hamburg titlist Nikolay Davydenko of Russia and third-seeded
Argentine Juan Monaco will tangle with Spaniard Daniel Munoz-De La Nava.
Almagro was last week's runner-up in Bastad., while Monaco was a runner-up in
Stuttgart last week.
The 2012 Hamburg champion will collect $265,000.
