Flushing Meadows, NY (Sports Network) - Americans Liezel Huber and Lisa
Raymond outlasted Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova in a three-set marathon to
win the women's doubles title at the U.S. Open.
Huber and Raymond rallied for a 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-3) triumph that took
two hours and 47 minutes to complete.
King and Shvedova won last year's title, beating Huber and Nadia Petrova in
three sets. Huber was appearing in her fourth straight women's double final.
She teamed with Cara Black to beat Raymond and Samantha Stosur in 2008, then
again went to the final with Black in 2009 and lost to the Williams sisters.
The 38-year-old Raymond became a three-time Open doubles champion. She won the
crown in 2001 with Rennae Stubbs, then captured the title in 2005 with Stosur.
King and Shvedova were trying to become the first team to repeat as doubles
champion at the U.S. Open since Spain's Virginia Ruano Pascual and Argentina's
Paola Suarez won three titles in a row from 2002-04.
