Haynesworth Has 'Jolly Green Giant' Redskins Debut

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) -- Jason Campbell has practiced with Albert Haynesworth for only one day. But the Washington Redskins quarterback already knows he'd better stay out of his way.

"I saw him get a big push up the middle, and he almost ran me over," Campbell said during the first day of minicamp Friday. "I just had to look up for a second and say, 'Oh, that's the Jolly Green Giant.' I'll leave him alone for the first day."

Albert Haynesworth, 27, was never going to go unnoticed in his debut at Redskins Park. Not with a new seven-year, $100-million free-agent contract, a 6-foot-6, 320-pound frame, and a reputation for exceptional talent, nagging injuries and occasional petulance.

But even without shoulder pads Friday, on a slippery field under a light drizzle that accentuated speed and stifled power, the run-stuffing, All-Pro defensive tackle drew plenty of looks from new teammates and coaches.

"Albert looked great," coach Jim Zorn said. "He's just a big load, and when he pushes it's hard to stop him. With the wet grass out there, he slipped a couple of times. But also, when he wants to push he can really push. You can see his penetration into the backfield."

Haynesworth figures to be the keystone of a retooled defensive line that also adds first-round draft pick Brian Orakpo, a pass-rushing defensive end from Texas, and Renaldo Wynn, acquired as a free agent from the New York Giants. Combine that with 14-year veteran Phillip Daniels, among others, and Haynesworth says he sees promise in the guys sandwiching him on the line.

"We've got great ends, we've got big ends and fast ends," said Haynesworth, who was signed in the first day of free agency from the Tennessee Titans. "We've got everything. We don't have just one type of end like in Tennessee. We can adjust to what team we're playing and be effective."

Impressive talk considering the Titans' defense allowed only 211 yards per game last year. Washington's average of 289 yards was fourth in the league, but its 24 sacks tied for 28th.

Haynesworth's career-high 8 1/2 sacks, 51 tackles and three forced fumbles would've helped.

"I'm not the only big guy on the team I guess," Haynesworth said. "I've got Phillip Daniels. That guy is huge. I've never seen anything that big. We've got a lot of big guys and we all can move. You'll see a lot of different stuff from us."

Character remains a question. In 2006, Haynesworth received a league-record, five-game suspension for stomping on Dallas Cowboys center Andre Gurode. He currently faces two misdemeanor traffic charges from a December accident in which another driver was seriously injured.

"I'm not really worried about it," Haynesworth said. "I'm out here and I've got to get better on the field, and let my lawyer and agent take care of all that good old stuff."

Notes:@ WRs James Thrash and Santana Moss dressed but did not participate in on-field activities. Thrash is out with a neck injury and Moss is suffering from shin splints, Zorn said. LB Rocky McIntosh also missed camp Friday to attend a funeral in the family. ... The Redskins signed DT Vaka Manupuna, who was with the team in training camp in 2006 and 2007 and spent last year playing for Utah in the Arena Football League.
