WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- When the Redskins took Jason Campbell in the first round 4 years ago, the hope was he'd be the franchise quarterback for the ensuing decade or more. There were signs Wednesday night the Redskins might be willing to end the Jason Campbell era in favor of Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler.
Multiple reports say the Redskins have begun actively pursuing a trade for Cutler, with the Washington Post saying the Redskins are trying to close the deal as quickly as possible.
Cutler, who was 1 of 3 quarterbacks in the league last year to throw for 25 touchdowns and 4500 yards been feuding with Broncos management. Tuesday, the Broncos said they'd try to trade him.
Jason Campbell would almost certainly be part of an offer the Redskins made. The Post is reporting Campbell could be packaged with several draft picks to get Cutler.
As for Campbell, he has shown signs of brilliance in a Redskins uniform. This was exemplified in the first half of last season when he led the team 6-and-2 and didn't throw a single interception. However, in the second half he came back to earth, as the team went 2-and-6 and missed the playoffs.
Campbell's contract with the Redskins is over at the end of this coming season, and the team has very conspicuously failed to offer him an extension.
9NEWS NOW Sports Director Brett Haber spoke with Campbell at Wednesday's Capitals game and asked Campbell if he'd consider being Cutler's back-up.
Campbell said, "No, I'm a starter."
He added that for now the story about the trade "is just a rumor."
Haber asked Campbell if anyone with the Redskins had spoken to him to reassure him that he, Campbell, was still "their guy."
Campbell said they had done so when the rumors originally surfaced over a week ago, but not since.
