South Lakes students organize Be AMYazing Triathlon

RESTON, Va. (WUSA 9) -- When you lose a friend or loved one, keeping their memory alive is often very important. Kacey Hirshfeld, Olivia Wolfe and Hannah Becker, three field hockey players at South Lakes High, are making sure their childhood friend Amy Boyle is never forgotten.

Amy died of brain cancer in 2008 and is described as a happy, fun loving girl.

"She was one of those kids who was always having a good time no matter what she was doing," said Hirshfeld. "When she died, it kind of hit the school because it's something as such a young kid that you're really not expecting."

Amy was athletic and loved the Pittsburgh Steelers and even met some of her gridiron heroes as part of her wish for the Make-a-Wish foundation. Although she never grew up to join her friends from Hunters Woods Elementary on the Seahawks field hockey team, Hirshfeld, Wolfe and Becker vowed not to let Amy's memory leave with her physical passing. For the fourth year in a row, they will be organizing the Be AMYazing Reston Youth Triathlon.

"The organization that supports the triathlon is Amy's Amigos, and that was what began the raising money in her name ... out of that grew the Reston Youth Triathlon," said Wolfe.

Be AMYazing is a place for children to test their athletic spirit while raising money for The Childhood Brain Tumor Foundation, an organization near and dear to Amy's friends.

"I think that was a really big affect on us keeping going and keeping going after she had passed, to keep raising money for her," said Becker.

In the six years since Amy's death, her friends have raised awareness about struggling with terminal illness, and they've kept alive the memory of their happy, fun friend by raising over 60 thousand dollars for cancer research.

"We want everyone to know what an amazing person Amy was and how great her family has been through it and how strong and passionate she was even through her diagnosis ... We want to be able to help those kids who are ... who were in the same position as her."

The Reston Youth Triathlon will be Sunday at 8:00 a.m. Follow this URL for more information about the event:
