Santa Clara, CA (Sports Network) - The San Jose Earthquakes extended their
lead atop the Western Conference on Sunday, scoring on three direct free kicks
en route to a 4-0 win over Chivas USA at Buck Shaw Stadium.
Victor Bernardez, Simon Dawkins and Ramiro Corrales popped up with the goals
that helped San Jose (16-6-5) improve to 53 points on the season, seven points
clear of second-place Real Salt Lake.
Bernardez opened the scoring in the 11th minute, curling a free kick from
distance around the wall and into the lower corner.
The lead was doubled six minutes before the break when Chris Wondolowski
played in Dawkins, who was able to get a quick shot off under pressure and
fire it past the on-rushing Dan Kennedy.
San Jose continued to pepper Kennedy with a barrage of shots, but the Chivas
'keeper stood tall to keep the visitors in the game.
Kennedy was undone twice more though, conceding a pair of set pieces from
Corrales in the 71st and 81st minutes to put the result beyond any doubt.
Chivas (7-11-7) remains in seventh place in the West on 28 points as its
winless streak extends to five games.
