Rochester, NY (Sports Network) - On a day when U.S. women's national team head
coach Pia Sundhage announced that she was stepping down, the team went out and
hammered Costa Rica, 8-0, in a friendly.
Sundhage said she will be returning to her native Sweden after a five-year
spell in charge of the American side, and she watched on Saturday as her team
easily dispatched Costa Rica.
Abby Wambach, a Rochester native, returned home with two goals and an assist,
while Megan Rapinoe also scored twice to help pace the Americans.
Alex Morgan, Carli Lloyd, Sydney Leroux and Heather O'Reilly each scored once
as the U.S. improved to 9-0-0 against Costa Rica.
The team will continue its gold-medal winning tour on Sept. 16 against
Australia.
