Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - The Calgary Flames signed defenseman Derek
Smith to a two-year contract worth $1.55 million on Wednesday.
"Derek came to training camp this year on a two-way contract and played his
way into our starting line-up," said Flames general manager Jay Feaster. "When
Mark Giordano went down with his hamstring injury, Smitty stepped-up and
shouldered an increased workload and did so in excellent fashion.
Smith, who is out with a high ankle sprain, has totaled two goals and 10
points in 32 games for the Flames this season.
In 43 appearances with Ottawa and Calgary over parts of the last three years,
Smith has recorded 11 points.
