Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - The Oakland Athletics have added pitcher Jeremy
Accardo to their bullpen, selecting the contract of the veteran right-hander
from Triple-A Sacramento.
Oakland's pitching staff was in need of reinforcement following consecutive
extra-inning games against the New York Yankees, including a 14-inning
marathon on Saturday. The Athletics used eight relievers on Saturday.
Accardo appeared in 26 games for Cleveland earlier this season, posting a 4.58
ERA with no record. He was designated for assignment by the Indians in early
August and signed a minor league contract with the Athletics after clearing
waivers.
In seven games with Sacramento, Accardo yielded just one run on seven hits in
7 2/3 innings.
The 30-year-old journeyman has a career 10-20 record with a 4.27 ERA and 38
saves in 261 big league games for San Francisco, Toronto, Baltimore and
Cleveland.
Oakland opened a spot on the 40-man roster by transferring infielder Brandon
Inge to the 60-day disabled list. Inge underwent arthroscopic surgery to
repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder last week.
