Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - The Oakland Athletics recalled infielder Jemile
Weeks from Triple-A Sacramento Monday, as well as two of his minor-league
teammates, right-handed pitcher Jesse Chavez and infielder Daric Barton.
Weeks joins the club for the second time this year, having started 111 of the
team's first 121 games at second base before being optioned to the River Cats
on Aug. 21.
Although his eight triples ranks second-best in the American League, Weeks hit
just .220 with 54 runs and 20 RBI in 113 games played, and his .302 slugging
percentage was the lowest in the majors at the time of his demotion.
In 10 regular-season games with Sacramento, Weeks put up a .333 average with
10 RBI, though he later hit only .143 with one homer and one RBI in five
Pacific Coast League postseason games.
Like Weeks, Barton also joins the big-league club for his second stint this
year, having appeared in 37 games after starting the year on the disabled
list. He hit .198 with one home run and four RBI for Oakland before being sent
to Sacramento on June 2, where he hit .255 with eight home runs, 35 RBI and 49
runs scored.
Chavez, meanwhile, comes to the team as a late-season acquisition, having been
acquired Aug. 24 from the Toronto Blue Jays for cash considerations. In nine
games with the Blue Jays, Chavez was 1-1 with an 8.44 ERA in 21 1/3 innings,
though he did strike out 27.
After being optioned to Sacramento by the A's, Chavez appeared in two games --
one as a starter -- and put up a 1.80 ERA with nine strikeouts in 10 innings
pitched.
