Redskins Akeem Davis keeps perspective throughout his journey

Ashburn, Va. (WUSA9)--When it comes to making the Redskins active roster, it's no secret that safety Akeem Davis faces an uphill battle.

"We've got some veteran guys in the secondary trying to show me the way," says Davis.

True, but the NFL numbers game is unyielding and the odds could be against him. Davis is accustomed to the rough road. The Laurel, Mississippi native played community college football before making the leap to Division I Memphis, and soon thereafter tore his A-C-L.

"It was rough, but football like the game of life, you're going to be faced with a lot of adversity," says Davis.

The words sound like a sermon, one which Davis could certainly preach. Upon recovering from his knee injury, he received another blow. His mother Karen was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer which began in her liver and rapidly spread. Davis got the daunting news via phone call while he was away at college. Two weeks after receiving that phone call, his mother lost her battle with cancer.

"My mother was a woman of faith and she was a strong, strong woman," says Davis. "When she passed and went on home, that was one of the toughest weeks of my life, but knowing what type of character she had, she wouldn't want me to weep and stop doing what I'm doing."

Which explains Davis' perspective. Making the Redskins team and continuing his dream is obviously important but he's also a man who's been through real life altering stuff. He's experienced gutwrenching loss, and recently he experienced euphoric gain. Just a week into this most recent training camp, Davis became a father.

"Its been sort of a roller coaster but roller coasters are fun as long as you stay on," says Davis smiling.
