Nationals to host 'Play Ball Weekend' to inspire young fans

WASHINGTON (WUSA) - The Washington Nationals will celebrate the second annual "Play Ball Weekend" on June 24-26.
 
The weekend is a three-day effort to help kids learn, stay healthy and develop baseball skills. It's a part of a larger league-wide initiative inspire young people to participate in baseball.
 
 
"We’re pleased to partner with MLB and local organizations to make this weekend a meaningful way of engaging kids from around the region,” said Gregory McCarthy, vice president of community engagement for the Washington Nationals. 
 
"Play Ball Weekend" will kick-off with a series of youth clinics where children will meet players, receive instruction from Nationals coaches, and be given gift bags. 
 
Children will also participate in a parade, an equipment drive, a ball and bat giveaway over the course of the weekend.
 
The weekend will close with "Champions Day," dedicated to honoring local high school teams who have won state championships. These teams will receive awards, tickets, other goodies to celebrate their successes.
