Tillman to start for Orioles in opener vs Red Sox

SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) - Right-hander Chris Tillman has been selected by Orioles manager Buck Showalter to start on opening day against the defending champion Boston Red Sox.

Tillman went 16-7 with 3.71 ERA last season and made the AL All-Star team for the first time. He had a 16-18 lifetime record before his breakthrough 2013 season.

Showalter announced his decision on Monday, saying, "I'm proud of him. He deserves it."

Showalter says newcomer Ubaldo Jimenez will start the second game against Boston.

The 25-year-old Tillman says, "Anytime you get the chance to get that kind of opportunity it's a big deal. It's an honor."

Tillman is the Orioles' fifth different opening day starter in five-year span. Kevin Millwood started in 2010, followed by Kevin Millwood, Jeremy Guthrie, Jake Arrieta and Jason Hammel.
