Bud Selig scolds Orioles and Nats in scathing letter

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Major League Baseball Commissioner, Bud Selig, let the Baltimore Orioles and Washington Nationals have a piece of his mind about the two teams' shared TV rights dispute.

"I am deeply saddened by the fact that you have not been able to resolve amicably the pending broadcast rights dispute between the Baltimore Orioles ... the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network ... and the Washington Nationals," Selig's June 30th letter to the clubs said.

The letter was addressed to Peter Angelos and Theodore Lerner.

Selig didn't hold back his disappointment with the two owners about how they are handling sharing MASN.

"We have expended hundreds of hours and extensive resources in an effort to reach an accommodation the preserves the massive and inherent value of MASN for the benefit of both clubs," the letter stated.

Selig then set the record straight by notifying the teams that Major League Baseball had ruled on the dispute between the Nationals and the Orioles.

"This decision is final and binding," Selig's letter stated.

The Washington Post reported:Under the terms of the arrangement, the Nationals started with a 5 percent ownership stake in MASN. It has grown to 15 percent and will increase by 1 percent each year until the Nationals own 30 percent. Every five years, there would be a "reset" period allowing the Nationals to receive rights fees commensurate with the formula in the contract fall 2010. The first "reset" period, television rights fees for professional sports teams had exploded. The Nationals and Orioles entered into a bitter dispute over how much MASN owed the Nationals. As of 2012, the Orioles proposed giving the Nationals $34 million in rights fees from MASN; the Nationals asked for between $100 million and $120 million.

The Post's article also states that MLB ruled in favor of the Nationals after the letter below was sent to the teams.

Selig "dropped the mic" at the end of his letter by offering some perspective to the two clubs.

"On a personal note, I owned a club for decades and I can honestly say that under no circumstances would I have threatened, let alone commenced, litigation against Baseball."
