Kensington, Md. (WUSA)-Georgetown Prep's Hunter Lussi remembers his first triathlon well. It was a 500 yard swim, 10 mile bike, and 2.5 mile run. He was only six years old. In 2007 at the age of thirteen he became the youngest ever to complete a USTA -sanctioned Ironman.
"I was scared at first," says the Kensington teenager, now 15. "But once I heard that gun go off and the starter say three, two, one, I just did what I was trained to do."
This past September there he was finishing the Chesapeake Man Triathlon in Cambridge, Maryland where he set an event record for the swim.
"Hunter's always been a great natural swimmer," says his father Craig. "The triathlon piece just came because my wife and I were doing it too."
As impressive as he is, the younger Lussi has bigger goals in mind and believe it or not it involves some pretty important people on Capitol Hill.
"I want to get people up off the couch, exercising together," he says.
And we wants to do it by creating an annual triathlon day where everyone in the country would participate in a race. Maybe not a full race but as he explains it, "just be out there exercising with friends and family."
To get it done he's reached out to several members of Congress with letters, phone calls, you name it. Even President Obama has heard from the precocious young man.
"He's been emailing all of them everyday!" Says his dad. We figured at some point we'll get some responses back.
And whether his grand plan comes to fruition or not, Hunter says he will somehow, someway always push for increased physical fitness amongst families. "I figured by writing the President, that hopefully will get them to think maybe this is a good idea.
