West Caldwell, NJ (Sports Network) - Stroke-play medalist Jim Holtgrieve and
defending champion Louis Lee both picked up easy wins on Monday to advance to
the second round of the USGA Senior Amateur Championship.
Holtgrieve, who will serve as the U.S. Walker Cup captain, won three of five
holes from the seventh to 11th en route to a 4 & 3 win over Patrick Tallent,
the 2010 runner-up.
Lee won three of four holes from the ninth to go 4-up with six holes to go. He
hung on for a 3 & 2 win over Martin West at Mountain Ridge Country Club.
Three other former champions won on Monday. Greg Reynolds, the 2002 champ,
beat Mike Booker, 2 & 1. Mike Rice, the 2005 winner, bested Michael Stephens
by the same score, while 2010 champion Paul Simson held off Steve Rogers, 1-
up.
The championship continues on Tuesday with the second and third rounds. The
quarterfinals and semifinals are set for Wednesday and the 18-hole final is
slated for Thursday.
