Williamsburg, VA (Sports Network) - Jiyai Shin fired a 9-under 62 on Thursday to grab the lead with the first round of the Kingsmill Championship suspended due to darkness.

Shin is chasing her first victory since the 2010 season when she won two events.

Dewi Claire Schreefel was 7-under par through 16 holes of the first round, when play was called for the night to due darkness on the River Course at Kingsmill Resort & Spa.

Paula Creamer opened with a 6-under 65 and was joined in third place by Maria Hjorth, Azahara Munoz and Beatriz Recari.

There was a weather delay on Thursday that lasted just under two hours that pushed play back. The round was suspended for the night with 33 players left on the course.

Shin did all of her scoring in bunches in the first round. She birdied the 10th and 11th to get her round going. After three straight pars, Shin converted a birdie effort at the 15th.

The 2008 Women's British Open champion followed with birdies on Nos. 16 and 17 to get to 5-under. Around the turn, it was more of the same.

Shin birdied the par-5 third, then after missing the green at the fourth, the horns blew to bring players off the course.

She returned to a difficult pitch shot, which she promptly holed for birdie.

"When I left the course, I was really worried. I thought, 'Okay, I left the hard chip shot, how can I practice? In my memory, my mind was all about the chip shot, it was really hard," Shin explained. "Then after rest, a little bit of practice for chipping, and when I went out, I chipped it in."

Shin wasn't finished either. She birdied the par-5 seventh and made it two in a row with a birdie at eight. Shin closed with a par to grab the early lead.

"When I started this morning, it was a little windy. I just kept focused on safe play, but when I made a birdie on the first couple holes, I said okay, I feel good today, so let's play a little bit aggressive," said Shin.

Schreefel also started on the back nine. She poured in three birdies in a 4- hole span from the 11th. Schreefel birdied the 17th to make the turn at minus-4.

Around the turn, she birdied the fourth and eagled the seventh before play was called for the day.

NOTES: The first round will resume on Friday at 7:10 a.m. ET...Shin missed two months earlier this year with a wrist injury...Cristie Kerr, a two-time winner here at Kingsmill when this event was the Michelob ULTRA Open at Kingsmill, opened up with a 1-over-par 72.
