Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Mike Glennon threw three touchdown passes to
lead the NC State Wolfpack to a 27-10 victory over the Boston College Eagles
at Carter-Finley Stadium.
Glennon was efficient all afternoon, completing 27-of-41 passes for 245 yards
for the Wolfpack (7-5, 4-4 ACC). Shadrach Thornton rushed for 105 yards while
Tobias Palmer caught seven passes for 55 yards and two touchdowns.
Chase Rettig's season came to a disappointing end as he threw for just 123
yards and three interceptions for BC (2-10, 1-7). Rolandan Finch was solid for
the Eagles on the ground, rushing for 144 yards and their lone touchdown.
Boston College struck first on a Nate Freese 20-yard field goal late in the
first quarter. NC State answered with a touchdown at the 9:05 mark of the
second quarter when Glennon found Quintin Payton from four yards out. The
touchdown came two plays after a Wolfpack gamble on fourth-and-eight paid off
as Glennon connected with Charlie Hegedus for a 28-yard completion.
The Eagles were driving late in the half but Rettig was picked off by David
Amerson who returned it 55 yards for another Wolfpack touchdown. For Amerson,
who set an ACC and NC State record last season with 13 interceptions, it was
his third career touchdown. The Wolfpack led 14-3 at the break.
After a couple of empty possessions early in the second half, Boston College
finally broke through with Finch's four-yard touchdown run midway through the
third to cut the lead to 14-10.
Any momentum the Eagles had from that score was erased when Glennon led an
11-play, 72-yard touchdown drive that culminated with a nine-yard touchdown
pass to Palmer. Niklas Sade missed the extra point however, leaving NC State
with the 20-10 advantage.
Eager to lead his team back down the field, Rettig tried to force a throw on
the first play of the next Eagles' drive and was intercepted by Justin Burris.
Two plays later, Glennon and Palmer hooked up once again from 25 yards out to
give the Wolfpack a commanding 27-10 lead.
The Eagles finish the year having lost four in a row and nine of their last 10
games. NC State is eligible for a postseason bowl for the third consecutive
season.
