Chapel Hill, NC (Sports Network) - Bryn Renner threw for 231 yards and three
scores as the North Carolina Tar Heels cruised to a 66-0 victory over the
Idaho Vandals at Kenan Stadium.
Renner completed 14-of-19 passes while only playing the first half for North
Carolina (3-2). Four different rushers had at least 54 yards rushing in the
game led by Romar Morris, who finished with 74 yards. Giovanni Bernard (70
yards) and Marquise Williams (61) each scored a pair of touchdowns. Quinshad
Davis caught two touchdown passes and had a game-high 89 receiving yards. The
Tar Heels have won consecutive games for the first time this season.
Dominique Blackman was intercepted four times while completing only 19-of-35
pass attempts for 109 yards for Idaho (0-5). The Vandals have lost eight
straight dating back to last season.
North Carolina scored seemingly at will in the first half. First, Renner
threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Sean Tapley just over a minute into the
game. Just four minutes later, Erik Highsmith recovered a fumble in the end
zone as the Tar Heels jumped out to a 14-0 lead.
Pete Mangum blocked a punt attempt by Idaho to set up the Tar Heels' next
score, a two-yard touchdown run from Bernard.
Renner finished off the high-scoring first quarter with a 35-yard touchdown
pass to Davis to cap off a drive that went for 70 yards on just three
plays.
Bernard ripped off a 68-yard rushing touchdown early in the second quarter,
and Casey Barth added a 33-yard field goal with just under five minutes left
in the half as North Carolina's lead expanded to 38-0.
It wouldn't be the last score of the half as A.J. Blue punched it in from
three yards out after Dion Guy set up the Tar Heels deep in Idaho territory
with a 25-yard interception return.
With such a massive lead, Williams' was brought in for Renner in the second
half and his first completion was a 35-yard touchdown pass to Davis as
the Tar Heels pulled even further ahead.
Williams added a pair of rushing touchdowns as the Tar Heels' lead ballooned
to 66-0.
North Carolina out-gained Idaho by a 575-189 margin. The Vandals had only nine
first downs in the game and allowed nine Tar Heel red zone trips.
