Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
ARMY: The Black Knights kicked off their 2012 season with a 42-7 setback at
San Diego State. The Aztecs beat Army at its own game, as they notched four
rushing touchdowns. The Black Knights (0-1) were paced by Raymond Maples who
accounted for a game-high 107 rushing yards on 19 attempts, followed by Terry
Baggett with an even 100 yards and the only score of the night on one of his
13 carries. Trent Steelman converted 3-of-8 passes for just 50 yards, while
two of his eight throws were picked off. Army, the top rushing team in the
nation in 2011 with an average of 346.5 ypg, finished the night with a
collective 282 yards on the ground. While the option game was largely out of
sync, SDSU opened up a 21-0 halftime lead and led 35-0 midway through the
third quarter before reserves took over for both teams in the fourth. Army
returns to action this Saturday when the team hosts Northern Illinois in its
home opener at Michie Stadium.
BYU: The Cougars moved to 2-0 with Saturday's 45-13 win over Weber State of
the Football Championship Subdivision. Three different quarterbacks combined
to post six touchdowns as the outcome was never really in question. Riley
Nelson completed 18-of-29 passes for 244 yards with one touchdown and one
interception, all in the first half. Cody Hoffman headlined the receiving
corps with seven catches for 115 yards and a score, with 110 of those yards
coming in the first half. Michael Alisa led the charge on the ground with 53
yards and a TD on 11 carries. All told, BYU racked up a well-balanced 532
yards of total offense. The Cougars had 307 yards passing and 225 yards on the
ground. Spencer Hadley came up with two sacks for the defense. BYU will travel
to Utah this weekend for its first road test of the year.
NAVY: The Midshipmen had the weekend off after suffering a lopsided 50-10 loss
to Notre Dame a week earlier to open the season. Their next contest is at
winless Penn State this Saturday.
NOTRE DAME: Notre Dame narrowly edged Purdue at home, 20-17 to improve to 2-0
and move to No. 20 in this week's AP poll. Head coach Brian Kelly inserted
quarterback Tommy Rees into the game with 2:12 remaining, and Rees led the
offense on a game-winning touchdown drive. Kyle Brindza capped the decisive
drive with a 27-yard field goal in the final seconds. Everett Golson started
for Notre Dame and threw for 289 yards and a score, but he fumbled late in the
fourth quarter, which led to Caleb TerBush's 15-yard, game-tying touchdown
pass to Antavian Edison. Rees, who was suspended for the team's season-opening
win over Navy in Ireland, completed 3-of-8 passes, including a 21-yard strike
to Robby Toma, on the final drive. Golson also ran for a touchdown, while
Tyler Eifert had 98 yards on four catches. After the game, coach Kelly said
Golson was having a hard time gripping the football, and that the coaches
decided to go with Rees to run the two-minute offense. He also quelled any
quarterback controversy, stating that Golson is still the starter when the
team travels to Michigan State this week.
