Albany, NY (Sports Network) - Sam Rowley scored 19 points and hit a critical
jumper in the final seconds as the fourth-seed Albany Great Danes beat the
fifth-seed Maine Black Bears, 50-49, in the first round of the America East
Tournament at SEFCUA Arena.
Jaco Iati added 11 points for Albany (22-10) which moves on to face top-seed
Stony Brook in Sunday's semifinals.
Justin Edwards scored 18 points and Xavier Pollard tallied 13 for Maine
(11-19).
It was Maine that led 33-24 at halftime after shooting 58.3 percent from the
field while holding Albany to just 32.1 percent.
The Great Danes fought back and tied the game at 48-48 with just over a
minute to play. Mike Allison split a pair of free throw attempts on the Black
Bears' next possession. The Great Danes took over with 32 seconds remaining
and eventually Rowley got a shot to fall and give them the lead. Edwards had a
shot go off the mark in the final seconds to give the win to Albany.
Albany outscored the Black Bears, 13-4, from the free-throw line.
