Richmond, VA (Sports Network) - Sherrod Wright tallied 23 points as the
fourth-seeded George Mason Patriots took down fifth-seeded Drexel Dragons in
the quarterfinal round of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament at the
Richmond Coliseum.
Byron Allen chipped in 16 points for GMU (18-13), which also received 10
points off the bench from Vertrail Vaughns. The Patriots will take on the top-
seeded Northeastern Huskies in the semifinals on Sunday.
Frantz Massenet paced Drexel (13-18) with 20 points and four assists. Damion
Lee went 2-of-10 from the floor to net 11 points while Daryl McCoy grabbed 12
rebounds.
Both teams struggled in the early going. Drexel shot just 34.6 percent from
the field including 1-of-8 from beyond the arc in the first half while the
Patriots made only 34.4 percent of their field goal tries. GMU took a slight,
27-23 lead into halftime after the ugly opening period.
The Dragons improved to hit on 39.1 percent of their attempts from the field
after the intermission, but the Patriots sank 17-of-19 at the free-throw line
to extend their lead and advance.
Although Drexel held a 33-28 edge in the rebounding battle, it was not enough
to overcome its 17 turnovers, which the Patriots converted into 21 points.
